Tomáš Horváth runs several hospitality businesses in Brno: the cosmopolitan Parq Café on Moravské náměstí, the popular Soul Bistro on Jakubská, a coffee truck above Brno's water reservoirs, and he's preparing to open two more cafés. How does he manage so many venues at once, keep track of revenue and stay in control? In our new video case study, he shared why he chose Storyous and how the system helps him in day-to-day operations.

"I see Storyous as the twenty-first century. A modern approach to data, new features that keep coming, and a real reflection of the market – the previous system simply couldn't do that." - Tomáš Horváth, the owner of Parq Café, Soul Bistro and other venues.

Full Interview with Tomáš Horváth

My name is Tomáš Horváth, I'm from Brno, where we run several hospitality businesses. Among them is a cosmopolitan café in the award-winning park on Moravské náměstí – Parq Café. We've also been running Soul Bistro for twelve years, which we recently relocated to Jakubská street. We operate a coffee truck above Brno's water reservoirs – everyone's welcome to visit. And right now, we're preparing to open two more cafés, a container-style concept selling pastries, local products and so on.

Why did you choose Storyous?

I saw a lot of advantages – better analytics, better insight into things. The versatility of the system definitely helped us. For example, here at the café in the park, the mobile waiters are a huge help because we have an enormous terrace, an outdoor seating area for a hundred people, and it fundamentally speeds up service. I often see cafés or restaurants that don't use it, where three people are queuing at the till waiting to have their orders rung up – and I feel like the mobile waiter can easily save you one full member of staff, no question. So that was one of the reasons. The completeness and robustness of the system convinced us, and that's why we still use it today across three or four venues.

You use Storyous in all your venues. How does it help to have everything under one roof?

It helps enormously in that you're familiar with the system's environment. You can check on anything remotely. A definite advantage over the previous system is that we access Storyous through a web interface – it doesn't matter whether you're on Apple, Windows or anything else, which is important for us. And the ability to compare venues – that's where it's at its best. Including the mobile app on your phone, where you can monitor what's happening in a venue in real time. Having everything under one roof is always better.

How do you use the ability to track revenue in real time on your phone in practice?

When you see the open tabs in a given venue, from experience you can tell when the amount means things are getting a bit hectic – and you either head over there yourself or quickly reinforce the team by moving a staff member to that venue. It means I know roughly what the hourly revenue can be. When I see it approaching the limit relative to the number of staff, I know it's time to add more hands.

How do you use data from the Storyous back office?

We look at it regularly for recurring events, or when an event is coming up that we've done before – we can look back at the history very easily in just a few clicks, including the product mix that sold on that particular day. So that's definitely one benefit. The second is fiscal or quarterly and monthly overviews. And it's also great to see where you've come from and where you're heading. Probably the most important data are the year-on-year comparisons.

How do you find the integration between the Storyous POS system and the Teya payment terminal?

Again, the clarity of seeing what's happening with card payments. And as far as the system goes, the full integration into Storyous – the fact that you don't have to enter the amount into a separate device – is what speeds things up and makes it more efficient. Including the mobile waiter, which simply prints the receipt straight away and all that.

What advice would you give to someone who wants to open a hospitality business?

What to watch out for? I think anyone considering it should absolutely go and work in hospitality first. It's incredibly hard to open a place without any experience. At the same time, I think the market is becoming a bit saturated, which makes it all the more important to operate with the right approach. A well-chosen POS system can guide you through running the business pretty well – whether it's setting margins, managing inventory, promotions and so on. It's definitely an important factor in success.

Would you recommend Storyous to others?

Based on my experience, yes, and I've actually already done it. For me, it's the clarity and modern approach to data. We have experience with a previous system that belongs in the twentieth century – and Storyous, I see that as the twenty-first century, with new features that keep coming and a real reflection of the market. I would recommend Storyous, yes.
